Completing construction on the new parking lot took a step forward this week with the arrival of the lot’s lighting fixtures. The need to have the lighting installed prior to the completion of other improvements has caused a slight delay in construction. The lights, which will be installed by a Duke Energy subcontractor, are both attractive and dark sky complaint. Bollard style lighting will be installed along the sidewalk adjacent to The Work’s railcar, which will allow pedestrian access from State Route 48 into the downtown district, and vice versa.
July 26, 2024
The lot remains open on the weekends. Crews are working on the left turn lane along State Route 48 and pouring sidewalks.
Aug. 9, 2024
The walkway along the railcar within the new parking lot was installed this week. This walkway will allow easy access into the downtown district or to State Route 48, where it joins with existing walkways. Bollard-style lighting soon will by added along the walkway.
Aug. 23, 2024
Installation of the bollards along the sidewalk inside the new parking lot were completed by Duke Energy. The sidewalk stretches from State Route 48 into the downtown district. Additionally, the concrete entryway into the lot from First Street was poured.
Sept. 3, 2024
Curbing was installed at the sidewalks near City Hall. Installation of the bollard lighting was completed, and poles were installed for the main lot lighting. Landscaping will begin this week with the final course of paving set for mid-September.
Sept. 5, 2024
The lot is open on weekends and evenings. Landscaping has been planted, and the final course of blacktop will be installed Sept. 18. As the new downtown parking lot is finished, the focus now will shift to a re-alignment of the parking lot adjacent to City Hall. Plans include centralized access from the new stretch of Harrison Avenue. The existing access into the parking area from Railroad Avenue will be eliminated as new sidewalks will be installed. The new sidewalks, and centralized access will add pedestrian and vehicular safety in one of the more traveled areas of the downtown district. Other aspects of the project include re-paving, re-striping, new lighting and storm water upgrades.

Landscaping and lighting were completed at the new parking lot.
Sept. 17, 2024
The final coat of asphalt was poured. Then the lot was striped and painted.
