Cold weather can put your home’s plumbing at risk. When temperatures stay below freezing, taking a few simple steps can help prevent frozen or burst pipes—and costly repairs.
When Temperatures Stay Below Freezing
Give Pipes a Helping Hand
If pipes run through cabinets or vanities, open the doors to allow warmer room air to circulate around them.
Keep Water Moving
Allow a small, steady trickle of water to run from faucets. The cost of a little extra water is typically much lower than repairing a broken pipe.
If Your Pipes Do Freeze
Shut Off the Water Immediately
Turn off the main water shut-off valve right away. Do not attempt to thaw pipes until the water is turned off.
Thaw Pipes Safely with Warm Air
Gently warm the frozen pipe using a hair dryer or space heater. Never leave heaters unattended, and do not use open flames or kerosene heaters.
Turn Water Back On Slowly
Once pipes are thawed, slowly restore water flow. Check pipes and joints for cracks or leaks that may have occurred during freezing.
