[ARCHIVED] Loveland High School Student Council Night

2018 Student Council Night

At the April 24th City Council Meeting, thirteen Loveland High School juniors presided over the meeting assuming the roles of council members and city staff.  In a tradition that dates back over forty years, the students passed legislation, welcomed guest speakers along with bringing forth their own ideas for the city to consider.  Leading up to the meeting, each student worked with their counterpart to discuss the agenda and learn about local government. City Manager David Kennedy stated, "I know I speak for all the staff members involved in saying we were very impressed with their effort and their enthusiasm." Mayor Kathy Bailey added "Student Night is always a great experience, and this year was no exception.  The students are truly exceptional young men and women, with bright futures ahead.  They each did a fantastic job in their respective roles, and we appreciate them sharing their talents with us. It was a wonderful night for all of us, and thanks to Mr. Volkman for organizing this event each year."

The program which is coordinated by Loveland High School teacher David Volkman, is a great opportunity for the students to learn firsthand how a city operates.  Mr. Volkman added "This unique partnership between the City of Loveland and Loveland High School has been a tremendous learning opportunity for 42 years, helping our young leaders learn about local government, and to inspire them to be leaders of the future. Our students come away from the program with a deep appreciation for the challenges, rewards and complexities of public service."

The students that participated were the following: Eileen Wassel (Mayor Kathy Bailey), Drew Vanderhorst (Vice Mayor Robert Weisgerber), Sarah Stevens (Councilman Neal Oury), Istvan Varga (Councilwoman Angela Settell), Sophia Muir (Councilman Ted Phelps), Courtney Henthorn (Councilman Tim Butler), Jordan Morrison (Councilman Kent Blair), Hannah Ackley (City Manager David Kennedy), Jacob Kiley (Clerk of Council Misty Cheshire), Megan Pedicini (City Solicitor Joseph Braun), Laura Hayes (Acting Finance Director Michelle Byrde), Madison Pecot (Police Chief Sean Rahe), and Daniel Eilert (Fire Chief Otto Huber).
