The City of Loveland has been named a Tree City USA® by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to effective urban forest management. Events are planned April 23 and 24 to celebrate the city’s commitment to the environment.
"Tree City USA communities see the impact an urban forest has in a community," said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. "The trees being planted and cared for by Loveland are ensuring that generations to come will enjoy a better quality of life. This program creates a sense of civic pride, whether it's through volunteer engagement or public education."
To celebrate this accomplishment, the public is invited to an event at Phillips Park, 11667 Rich Road, on Friday, April 23 at 10:30 a.m. The Old Growth Forest Network will present a dedication award, recognizing the land along the park’s trail as an official old growth forest. Mayor Kathy Bailey will read an Arbor Day proclamation. Then attendees can take a short walk to see the forest.
The City of Loveland earned the Tree City USA recognition with assistance from its Tree and Environmental Committee led by Chairman Mike Meldon. Four core standards of urban forestry management were met: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and celebrating Arbor Day. The committee continues to work on initiatives to improve and maintain the city’s trees, as well as other vegetation.
"Now that society is starting to open up again as more people are getting vaccinated, you will be hearing a lot from us as a committee. We know that community buy-in and support is the key to success, and we truly want our initiatives to be successful for the betterment of all of Loveland," said Meldon.
The second event, the Annual Litter Pick-Up, will be held Saturday, April 24 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Nisbet Park in Downtown Loveland. All ages are welcome to participate. Supplies will be provided. Please wear a facemask, gloves, and old shoes.
