[ARCHIVED] Free Tree Giveaway for City Residents

Swamp White Oak

The City of Loveland's Tree and Environment Committee is leading a Free Tree Giveaway to residents. The city will give away 100 trees as an investment in Loveland’s tree canopy.

Residents may request up to two trees per household via an online order form. Orders will be accepted until all trees are reserved. Residents are responsible for planting and caring for the trees on their own. Trees will be available for pick up in October.

Three species of trees will be distributed: Black Cherry, Swamp White Oak, and Shadblow Serviceberry. Residents are encouraged to select trees that will be the “right fit” for their property, keeping overhead wires and expected growth in mind. Learn more about the tree varieties here.

Trees giveaways benefit the whole community by promoting biological diversity, diversifying the age of the city’s urban forest, and helping to protect against the next tree pest or disease invasion. Typically, trees distributed through giveaway programs have high survival rates because of a resident’s time investment (requesting the tree, picking up the tree, planting the tree, watering the tree, etc.). For instance, the City of Cincinnati has held its annual free tree giveaway, “Re-Leaf,” continuously since 1988.
