LPD is proud to use the latest technology to detect and deter criminal activity. Flock Safety Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) have been placed throughout the city to capture the "fingerprint" of vehicles entering our community. A vehicle fingerprint includes the license plate, make, model, color, and number of times the vehicle has been seen.
Alerts are sent to officers for cars wanted in connection with crimes, stolen vehicles, wanted persons, and Amber/Silver Alerts for missing persons. Approximately 70% of all crimes involve a vehicle, and Investigators can use the data (stored for 30 days) to identify cars used in crimes. All license plates are public information.
What Is Flock?
- License plate recognition
- Gathers objective evidence about vehicles, not people
- Alerts police of wanted vehicles
- Used to solve crime
- Adheres to all state laws
What Isn't Flock?
- Not facial recognition
- Not tied to personally identifiable information
- Not used for traffic enforcement
- Data not stored beyond 30 days
How Can Flock Help LPD?
- A senior resident with memory issues drove away from home. Family contacted LPD to report a missing person. A search of Flock could have provided a direction of travel. The resident's vehicle could have been entered into Flock's database, and officers would be alerted if/when it passed by any Flock license plate reader nationwide.
- A vehicle damaged more than $13,000 in city property and left the scene. Evidence left identified the make, model, and color of the vehicle. A search of the Flock database would have likely provided a license plate number within minutes.
